Why is most of the region's assisted living outside New Orleans?

Jefferson Parish alone has 37 licensed ARCPs to Orleans Parish's 8, because most purpose-built assisted living and nearly all of the small personal care homes were developed in Metairie and the suburbs, while the city kept its older nonprofit homes and nursing homes.

For a parent who wants to stay in the city, that means a short list concentrated Uptown and in Algiers, with a long waiting list at some of the older faith-based campuses. Families in Lakeview and Gentilly often widen the search to Metairie; see the Metairie page and the full roster.

What should a New Orleans family check first at an assisted living building?

Check the ARCP level on LDH's roster before anything else, because it decides whether the building can provide nursing (Level 4 only) and whether it is a small home or an apartment building.

Then ask for the posted statement of deficiencies, the emergency plan and the written disaster-fee formula, and the residency agreement's discharge criteria. Louisiana Medicaid will not pay the monthly fee, so confirm what happens if savings run out.
