What is assisted living in Louisiana?

In Louisiana, assisted living is a Level 3 or Level 4 adult residential care provider licensed by LDH: 17 or more residents in apartments with kitchenettes, with personal care, supervision, meals, activities and medication help, and at Level 4 only, intermittent nursing.

Smaller ARCPs, Level 1 personal care homes and Level 2 shelter care homes, provide similar care in house-like settings. Every level must keep an awake staff member on duty around the clock.

What does assisted living cost in Louisiana?

CareScout's 2025 Louisiana median for a private one-bedroom in assisted living is $61,950 a year, about $5,163 a month; no New Orleans-specific median is published.

Expect a base rate plus a care level, with medication management often priced separately. Louisiana Medicaid does not pay for assisted living; VA pension with Aid and Attendance and long-term care insurance can help.

Who is a good fit for assisted living?

Assisted living fits adults who need help with some daily activities or medications, want their own apartment and a social setting, and do not need continuous nursing or any of the six conditions Louisiana bars from ARCPs, such as ventilator dependency or restraints.

A resident must also be able to evacuate with the help the ARCP provides, which the provider checks in its pre-residency screening.

What should we check before choosing assisted living?

Check the level and capacity on LDH's roster, the posted statement of deficiencies, the residency agreement's discharge criteria and 30-day rate notice, the evacuation plan and disaster-fee formula, and how outside nursing is arranged at a Level 3 building.

Each licensed provider with 17 or more residents has its own page in our directory.

How does assisted living handle a hospital stay or a new nursing need?

A resident returning from the hospital to a Level 3 ARCP brings in a Medicare home health agency for any skilled care, and a resident with a prohibited condition such as wound vac therapy may stay up to 90 days with physician certification and outside providers coordinated by the ARCP.

Level 4 ARCPs may deliver or contract for those time-limited services themselves. If needs become permanent, the residency agreement's termination criteria decide what happens next; read them before signing.
