The money for care is running out

What Louisiana Medicaid will and will not pay for, and the order to do things.

Quick answer

It depends on the setting: Louisiana Medicaid can pay for a nursing home or for care at home for someone who qualifies, but it does not pay for an ARCP, so a parent in assisted living usually has to move or rely on family when savings are gone.

What happens when a parent's money for care runs out in Louisiana?

It depends on the setting: Louisiana Medicaid can pay for a nursing home or for care at home for someone who qualifies, but it does not pay for an ARCP, so a parent in assisted living usually has to move or rely on family when savings are gone.

The earlier you plan, the more choices remain. Start when the money left would cover about a year of current costs, not the last month.

How do I check whether a parent will qualify for Louisiana Medicaid?

Compare your parent's situation with the 2026 long-term care rules: nursing facility level of care, countable income up to $2,982 a month or enough medical expenses to spend the excess down, countable resources up to $2,000 for an individual, and no transfers below fair value in the past 60 months.

The home is generally excluded if your parent intends to return or a spouse lives there, subject to the $752,000 equity limit. A spouse at home keeps protected resources and income under federal standards.

2026 federal spousal standardAmount
Community spouse resource standard, minimum$32,532
Community spouse resource standard, maximum$162,660
Minimum monthly maintenance needs allowance$2,705.00 (effective July 1, 2026)
Maximum monthly maintenance needs allowance$4,066.50

What are the options when assisted living becomes unaffordable?

Families usually choose among a less expensive ARCP such as a small Level 1 or 2 home, a move home with LT-PCS, Community Choices Waiver or PACE support, VA pension with Aid and Attendance for eligible veterans and survivors, or a Medicaid-certified nursing home if care needs qualify.

Each option has a lead time. The CCW has a registry, PACE has an enrollment process, VA claims take months, and Medicaid applications need 60 months of statements. Begin the applications in parallel.

Can VA benefits help when savings run low?

Yes, for wartime veterans and surviving spouses: Aid and Attendance can pay up to $29,093 a year for a veteran with no dependents and $18,697 for a surviving spouse with none in December 2025 through November 2026, with unreimbursed care costs reducing countable income.

SituationMaximum annual rateAbout per month
Veteran with no dependents, Aid and Attendance$29,093$2,424
Veteran with one dependent, Aid and Attendance$34,488$2,874
Two veterans married to each other, both A&A$46,143$3,845
Surviving spouse, no dependents, Aid and Attendance$18,697$1,558
Veteran with no dependents, Housebound$21,313$1,776

VA pension rates effective December 1, 2025 through November 30, 2026.
