LDH's October 2026 roster lists 10 licensed adult day health care centers in the six parishes. Louisiana's 2025 median is $22,958 a year for five days a week, about $88 a day, and the ADHC Waiver or Community Choices Waiver can pay for people who qualify.
What adult day health care is
Adult day health care is a licensed daytime program for adults who need supervision and health support but go home at night. In Louisiana, centers are licensed by LDH. A typical day includes transportation, health monitoring by a nurse, help taking medications, two meals or a meal and a snack, activities, exercise and time with others. Some centers offer extended hours. For a family caregiver who works, it can be the difference between keeping a job and quitting one.

Most licensed centers are in Orleans Parish. Location matters more for adult day than for home health, because participants travel to the center every day; ask each about its transportation area.
What it costs
CareScout's 2025 Louisiana median for adult day health care is $22,958 a year for five days a week, or about $88 a day by our arithmetic, slightly below the national median of $24,700. Compared with paying a home care aide about $26 an hour for an eight-hour day, adult day is usually much less expensive for the same hours of supervision.
Who pays
Louisiana Medicaid's Adult Day Health Care Waiver is built around center attendance, for people 22 and older who meet long-term care Medicaid eligibility and nursing home level of care. It adds support coordination, home-delivered meals on days the participant is not at the center, a personal emergency response system and activity monitoring. The Community Choices Waiver also includes adult day health care among its services, and PACE Greater New Orleans uses a day center as the hub of its care. Families also pay privately, and some long-term care policies cover adult day.
Is it right for someone with dementia?
Often, yes. Structure and routine help many people with dementia, and a day of activity can mean better sleep at night. Ask how the center supports participants who wander or become anxious, how staff are trained, and whether the center serves people at your parent's stage. A trial day or two is the best test.
Questions to ask on a visit
Ask about the nurse's role, how medications are handled, the daily schedule, the ratio of staff to participants in activities, what happens if your parent becomes ill during the day, and the center's plan for hurricanes and other closures. Ask what the center needs from your parent's doctor to enroll.
Adult day and the family schedule
Most centers open on weekdays during daytime hours, with transportation windows in the morning and afternoon. Map those windows against the caregiver's work schedule before enrolling. A center whose van arrives at 9 a.m. does not help a caregiver who leaves for work at 7. Some families combine adult day with an hour or two of LT-PCS or private help at each end of the day to close the gap.
Adult day during hurricane season
Centers close for storms and power outages like other services. Ask how the center notifies families of closures, how much notice it gives, and whether it reopens before schools do. Build a backup plan for the days the center is closed, since those are often the same days family members are busy preparing their own homes.
A trial week
Many participants resist the idea of adult day and then come to enjoy it. A trial week, with the caregiver staying nearby the first day, lets your parent settle in. Ask the staff how your parent did each afternoon; they notice things families may not.
Checking a center's license
Every adult day health care center in Louisiana is licensed by LDH and appears on its monthly Licensed Providers Report with a license number and expiration date; our home health, hospice and adult day roster reproduces those records for the six parishes. Confirm the license before enrolling, ask when the center was last surveyed, and ask how it reports incidents to families. Complaints about a center go to LDH's Health Standards Section at 1-888-810-1819.
